Does SafeAssign detect AI? (October 2026)

Not on its own. SafeAssign compares a submission with existing sources and reports how much of it matches. Newly generated AI text often matches very little, so a low SafeAssign score doesn't show that a paper was written without AI. Blackboard's help center describes SafeAssign as a matching tool and contrasts it with AI detectors.

Quick answer

Detects AI on its own
No
Detector it uses
None
What it is
Plagiarism and integrity checker

No. SafeAssign finds text that matches existing sources; it doesn't score writing for AI.

Whatever SafeAssign runs, you can see how a draft reads to an AI detector first. Paste it in for an overall score and a highlight on every sentence that reads as machine-written.

How SafeAssign checks for AI

What Blackboard (formerly Anthology) documents, checked . Schools choose their own settings, so yours may differ.

  • It compares papers with sources that already exist

Blackboard's help center says SafeAssign compares submitted assignments against several databases containing millions of articles from the 1990s to the present, along with papers submitted at your institution and, for students who opt in, the separate Global Reference Database.

  • The score is a matching warning, not a verdict

The SafeAssign score is the probability that a paper contains matches to existing sources, and Blackboard calls it a warning indicator only. Below 15 percent counts as low, 15 to 40 percent as medium and over 40 percent as high.

  • Blackboard sets it apart from AI detectors

Blackboard's own page on protecting against AI plagiarism contrasts anti-plagiarism tools such as SafeAssign with AI detectors, and recommends assignments built on critical thinking, personal perspective and self-reflection.

What instructors see

  • A match percentage and the sources behind it

The Originality Report shows how much of the paper matches existing sources and where each matching section came from. It doesn't say whether a match was properly cited, so that call stays with you.

  • Nothing in the report speaks to AI

A low score only means little of the text matched known sources. To look into AI use, you need a separate detector your school approves, the student's drafts and a conversation about the work.

  • Settings to choose before anyone submits

You decide whether students can see their report. If you want submissions kept out of the Institutional and Global Reference Databases, select that option before students submit, because work already submitted can't be removed.

What students should know

  • A low SafeAssign score isn't an AI all-clear

If your school also runs an AI detector, that check is separate. Keep your notes, outline and drafts so you can show how the paper came together.

  • Quotes and paraphrases raise the score

Quoted and paraphrased material counts toward the match percentage even when you cite it, so a medium score isn't an accusation. Your instructor reviews whether each match is attributed.

  • If you're accused of using AI

Ask what evidence the concern rests on and share your process. Our guide on proving you didn't use AI walks through what to gather.

Flagged for AI when you wrote the work yourself? Here's how to show your work.

SafeAssign is the originality checker built into Blackboard. It does one job well, finding text that matches something already written, and that job is different from spotting AI writing.

Why AI-written text can pass SafeAssign

SafeAssign asks one question: does this text match something in its databases? A paper copied from a website or an old submission gets caught because the words already exist somewhere. An AI tool writes new sentences each time, so there is often nothing for SafeAssign to match, even when the whole paper was generated.

An AI detector asks a different question: does the writing itself read as machine-generated? That is why the two checks can disagree, and why a clean SafeAssign report says nothing either way about AI.

Questions about SafeAssign and AI detection

Still unsure? Browse our guides or ask our team.

Does SafeAssign detect AI?

No, not by itself. SafeAssign reports how much of a paper matches existing sources, and Blackboard's documentation describes it as a text-matching tool rather than an AI detector. A paper written with AI can still get a low score.

Can SafeAssign detect ChatGPT?

Not reliably. SafeAssign only flags ChatGPT output when that text happens to match something in its databases, such as a paper submitted earlier. Newly generated text often has little to match, so it can pass with a low score.

What AI detector does SafeAssign use?

None that Blackboard documents. SafeAssign's help pages describe source matching and a match percentage only. Schools that want AI checks in Blackboard connect a separate tool, such as Turnitin, where they use it.

Is there a SafeAssign AI checker?

No. It is an originality checker: it looks for copied or closely reworded text from sources it knows. An AI checker scores the writing itself for signs it was machine-generated, which is a different test.

Is there a SafeAssign AI detector setting I can turn on?

No such setting appears in Blackboard's SafeAssign documentation. Instructors turn on the Originality Report for an assignment, choose whether students can see it and decide whether submissions go into the reference databases.

Can SafeAssign detect QuillBot or paraphrased text?

Sometimes, when the paraphrase stays close to a source it knows. Blackboard says SafeAssign's sentence-matching score estimates the probability that two phrases have the same meaning, so rewording of a known source can still show up. Paraphrased AI text with no source behind it won't.

Can SafeAssign detect humanized AI text?

No. Humanizer tools rewrite AI output so it reads differently, and SafeAssign isn't looking for signs of AI in the first place. Only text that matches an existing source shows up in its report.

What SafeAssign score is too high?

Blackboard treats scores over 40 percent as high and below 15 percent as low, with 15 to 40 percent in between. Even a high score is a warning indicator only: your instructor still checks whether the matches are quoted and cited.
