How it’s calculated

A word-by-word comparison tuned for prose, so edits read like tracked changes rather than a wall of red and green.

Word-level comparison
Both texts are split into words and punctuation marks. We then find the longest run of words the two versions share, in order, using the Myers difference algorithm, the same method behind most version-control tools.
Readable changes
When a sentence is heavily rewritten, short leftovers like “the” or a comma can line up by chance. Those are folded into the surrounding change, so you see one clear replacement instead of scattered fragments.
Similarity
2 × shared words ÷ (original words + revised words)Identical texts score 100%, and texts with no words in common score 0%. Punctuation is compared but doesn’t count toward the score.
Words added and removed
Added words appear only in the revised text; removed words appear only in the original. “Places changed” counts each separate spot where the drafts differ.
Spacing and capitalization
Extra spaces and line breaks are ignored when matching words, so reflowing a paragraph doesn’t count as an edit. Tick “Ignore capitalization” to treat “Data” and “data” as the same word.

Text compare questions

Anything else? The help center has more.

No. The comparison runs in your browser, so contracts, manuscripts and student work never leave your device. Nothing is stored, and both boxes clear when you leave the page.

Essays, articles and long reports all work. Very long, very different texts take a moment longer, and if two sections have almost nothing in common we show the whole section as replaced rather than hunting for coincidental matches.

Copy the text out of each file and paste it in. Formatting such as bold, fonts and tracked changes isn’t compared, only the words themselves.

Not quite. Text compare checks two texts you already have against each other. A plagiarism checker searches the web and published sources for matches you don’t know about. For that, use our plagiarism checker.

Text compare shows what changed, not who changed it. To see whether the revised version reads as machine-written, paste it into the AI detector, which highlights the sentences that carry AI patterns.

Next, check whether it reads as human

Paste the same text into the AI detector to see which sentences read as machine-written, with a score you can explain to someone else.
