Does Blackboard detect AI? (October 2026)

Not by itself. Blackboard's built-in originality checker, SafeAssign, matches text against existing sources rather than scoring it for AI. Schools that use Turnitin can turn it on for Blackboard assignments, and Blackboard's newer Cursive tool records how a piece was written instead of judging the finished text.

How Blackboard checks for AI

What Blackboard (formerly Anthology) documents, checked . Schools choose their own settings, so yours may differ.

  • Turnitin runs inside Ultra assignments

Blackboard's help center says that if an institution uses Turnitin, instructors can enable it for assignments, and that Flexible Grading must be turned on to see the Originality Report scores.

  • The Turnitin listing describes similarity checks

Turnitin's listing in the Blackboard App Catalog describes similarity checking, collusion checks on the due date and similarity scores inside the Ultra assignment workflow, connected over LTI 1.3.

  • Cursive records the writing process

In July 2026 Blackboard launched Cursive, which stays with the writer from the first keystroke to submission and builds a record of drafting, editing and revision. It runs on the student's device, and Blackboard frames it as verifying authorship rather than detecting AI.

  • Blackboard's guidance favors assignment design

Blackboard's help center recommends tasks built on critical thinking, personal perspective and self-reflection, plus peer assessment and group work, as the best defense against AI plagiarism.

What instructors see

  • Turnitin scores show up in grading

When Turnitin is on for an assignment, its Originality Report scores appear in Flexible Grading. Ask your Blackboard administrator which Turnitin reports your school's setup includes.

  • SafeAssign won't flag AI writing

Its report covers matching text and sources. Read it for copying and citation problems, not as evidence about AI. See does SafeAssign detect AI? for what it can and can't catch.

  • Process evidence beats a single score

Version history, outlines and a short conversation about the work tell you more than any percentage. Blackboard's own guidance points the same way, toward assignments that draw on personal perspective and reflection.

What students should know

  • Your school's settings decide what gets checked

Blackboard itself doesn't score your writing for AI. If your course uses Turnitin or another tool, your syllabus or instructor should say so.

  • Keep your process visible

Save drafts and notes as you work. Where a school uses Cursive, it records your drafting and revision as you write, which is the kind of record that shows the work is yours.

  • If your work is flagged

Ask for the specific evidence and offer your drafts. Our guide on proving you didn't use AI covers what to gather.

Flagged for AI when you wrote the work yourself? Here's how to show your work.

Blackboard is the learning platform. What it can tell an instructor about AI use depends on which tools a school switches on inside it.

Why the answer depends on your school

Two schools on Blackboard can give very different answers to the same question. One may run Turnitin on every written assignment; another may rely on SafeAssign alone, which looks for matching sources and says nothing about AI. Your syllabus or your school's academic integrity page is the place to check.

Checking a draft yourself

For a second look before you submit, paste at least 80 words into the checker on this page. You get a 0 to 100 human score with the sentences that read as machine-written highlighted. Treat it as a prompt to revise or keep notes, not a prediction of what another detector will say.

Questions about Blackboard and AI detection

Still unsure? Browse our guides or ask our team.

Does Blackboard detect AI?

Not on its own. Blackboard checks for AI only through a tool the school connects, such as Turnitin. Its built-in SafeAssign looks for text that matches existing sources, which is a different test.

Can Blackboard detect ChatGPT?

Only if your school runs an AI detector inside it. SafeAssign may catch ChatGPT text that copies a known source, but newly generated text often has little to match. Ask your instructor which tools your course uses.

What AI detector does Blackboard use?

Blackboard doesn't ship its own AI detector. Schools that use Turnitin can enable it for Blackboard assignments, and Blackboard's newer Cursive tool records the writing process instead of scoring text for AI.

Is there a Blackboard AI detector in Ultra?

Not a built-in one. In Ultra, Turnitin is the integration Blackboard documents for originality scores, and it only appears where the institution uses Turnitin and Flexible Grading is on.

Is there a Blackboard AI checker for instructors?

Not as a built-in score. Instructors get SafeAssign's matching report, plus Turnitin scores in Flexible Grading if the school uses Turnitin. Some schools also use separate detectors outside Blackboard.

Can Blackboard detect QuillBot or paraphrased AI text?

Not directly. SafeAssign can catch paraphrases that stay close to a known source, but reworded AI text with no source behind it gives it nothing to match. Any AI check comes from a separate tool your school connects.

Can Blackboard detect humanized AI text?

Blackboard has no built-in way to. Blackboard itself has said it is moving away from detection and toward verifying authorship, through Cursive's record of how the work was written.

What is Cursive by Blackboard?

Cursive is a Blackboard tool launched in July 2026 that records the writing process, from the first keystroke to submission, on the student's device. Blackboard describes it as a way to verify authorship rather than detect AI.
