Supported file formats and limits

What you can upload on each plan, how long a single scan can be, and how to get the cleanest result from a file.

You can paste text on every plan. Uploads are handy for longer documents because we keep paragraphs and headings intact, which makes the highlights easier to follow.

File types by plan
FormatPlansNotes
.docx (Word)All plansTracked changes are ignored; we check the final text.
.pdfEssential and aboveText-based PDFs. Scanned pages need the image option.
.txtEssential and aboveUTF-8 encoding works best.
Images (.png, .jpg, .heic)Advanced and TeamPhotos of printed or handwritten pages, read with OCR.

Length limits

Each plan has a maximum length per scan: 1,500 words on Free, 25,000 on Essential, and 50,000 on Advanced and Team. Files can be up to 20 MB. If a document is over your limit, we'll ask you to trim it or upgrade before any credits are used.

Getting the best result from a file

  • Remove cover pages, tables of contents and reference lists if you can. They aren't prose, and they dilute the result.
  • For PDFs exported from slides or forms, paste the text instead. Layout-heavy PDFs can break sentences in odd places.
  • For handwriting, photograph one page at a time, flat and straight on, in good light.
