IB students write long, assessed pieces: the extended essay, internal assessments and the TOK essay. The IB encourages learning with AI tools but expects AI-generated work in an assessment to be credited. Winston AI shows which sentences read as machine-written, so students can check their own drafts and supervisors can see where to ask questions.
Using AI the way the IB expects
The IB's approach is transparency: AI tools can support learning, but AI-generated material in assessed work has to be credited where it appears and listed in the bibliography. Your school may set stricter rules for the extended essay or a particular subject, so check with your supervisor or coordinator.
For supervisors and coordinators
Check drafts early, while there is still time to talk about process. If a highlighted section has no credited AI use, ask the student to explain how they wrote it and to show their notes.
